Hi. I'm conciddering a switch over to windows 7, and need to know:
how well does it work with nvda?
is it as good as xp for general computing tasks, mostly playing music and surfing the web?
an overview would be much appreciated, sorry i'm not more specific. Thanks in advance, rob.

well rob, from what little time I had with win7 i'l say that yes. it works very well with it. just go and get yourself the latest snapshot or download the stable version of it and your good to go. it works very well within winamp, and it gave maby a cupple error tones in i e 8, but if your using firefox everything works great.

It works very well with Windows 7, at lesat version 2010-1, works well in IE, minor issues with some Flash, i.e. Jaws performed slightly better with some Flash pages, oddly, but for all your general stuff it worked very nicely, can post tasks and performance next week if you wish along with comments.
It has some problems in Word, does not recognize envelops/flags in Windows Live Mail, and not some in Thunderbird such as "has attacments" and some priorities, but nothing that will bug you.

tasks and performance reviews would be very nice, man, much appreciated. Do you know how it works with firefox? that being my browser of choice.
Thanks a lot, guys

yeah, they have been talking about ms office and things for quite sometime on the NVDA email list. I don't use word for my docs, I use jartt. if you want something that NVDA can work pritty well with either go with jartt or open office. I do'nt think it has very good access for excel, but as i've said I hardly ever use anything related to office as I don't need to at the moment.

Thanks for the Jartt pointer, I will check it out.
Does anyone use a standa alone, simple, calendar app with NVDA (for those who do not invest in Outlook)?
NVDA has been optimized for FireFox since 2007 when they got a big grant from the Mozilla foundation, so no screen reader will have better Firefox support than N
VDA.
My biggest issues, well, wishes, for future of NVDA is better direct braille support, but it depends on a lot of things, for instance better standardization amongst braille display manufacturers.
Also I have not had good luck with NVDA and Open Office on Windows can you use the Excel equivalent, can you spell check and use dictionary in the Write application eetc?
I know it works much better on Linux and Macs, but the problem is, apparently, that Open Office does not support IAccessible2, at lest not on the Windows platform.
Cheers
-B

IBM Lotus Symphony, a free re-bundle of Open Office, does support all that. It works.

NVDA works great with windows 7 and firefox thus far in my expereinces. Lotus Symphony .. is all the office apps accessible or just the Word equivalent? Does it work well with Jaws as well?

It at least works with their word processor and spreadsheets from what I've seen, and I have seen it work with JAWS though I personally haven't used it extensively.

Hellow Rob. It works just fine with windows 7 as a back up screen reader, but it refuses to work with skype and some other programs as well. I'm using jaws as my main screen reader, but got NVDA as a backup in case JAWS decides to crash.

it doesn't refuse to work with programs, and i hear it does work with skype, so i don't know what problem you're having

Harmony, what version of skype are you using? I have a really really old version of NVDA, main 3545, and Skype 5.0 Beta, and it works just fine with it. I too use NVDA as my backup.

i'd update the version of NVDA you are using. when i had win7 I believe at the time I had 2010.1 and it worked with skype just fine

also keep in mind that there is skype talking scripts out there that add functionality to skype for NDVa and other screenreaders.

At the time I didn't know about skype talking, but I'm using skype 4.2. JAWS works just fine with it with the scripts and skype talking, but NVDA is just not reading.

I have skype 3.8, will this work with the latest nvda and win 7?

Post 17 by zackmack2000 ( extreme killer of the keys) on Tuesday, 07-Sep-2010 8:53:12

no. you will have to upgrade to skype 4.2. and for poast 15, do you have the latest snapshot of NVDA? the latest from what i'm seing now is still 3814.
btw, the first bayta of 2010.2 will be out on the thirteenth of this month, r c 1 will be out on the seventeenth of next month, and then the next stable release of NVDA, which will be 2010.2 will be out on the twentyith of next month. I strongly suggest that you update to the latest snapshot for NVDA if possible, because there have been a lot of changes between now and when 2010.1 was released

Post 18 by zackmack2000 ( extreme killer of the keys) on Tuesday, 07-Sep-2010 8:56:53

skype 3.8 can't be installed on win7, that's why I said you will have to upgrade to skype 4.2.
